Chapter 8

The Past

At last, dinner ended. I retreated to my bedchamber. I was about to choose early slumber when there was a gentle tap at the door.

For a moment I was hopeful it might be Aurian, then reason kicked in and I reminded myself that was impossible, when his father and mine were on the cusp of war he would never be able to get inside the castle to knock on the door in broad daylight.

I rose from my bed and stubbed my toe. The explosion of pain was unexpected, and it lingered for far longer than it had any right to.

The knock came again. Limping, I made my way to the door and pulled it open, thinking this had better be worth the pain.

“Mirria.” My tone was flat because she always thought she had something important to say, but rarely did

“Why are you balancing on one foot, Lucy?” The look she gave me made it clear she thought I was an imbecile.

“I stubbed my toe,” I confessed, as the pain continued at a volume that drowned out the misgivings about admitting to my clumsiness.

“Perhaps you ought to wear your silk slippers in your bedchamber. They keep the soles of your feet soft.” She said it as though such a thing mattered.

“Does anyone in the world care if my feet are rough? I mean, they’re for walking on, so they should be resilient.”

Mirria sighed.

“Why are you here, anyway?”

“You didn’t eat much at dinner. Are you finally attempting to fit into your gowns?” Mirria asked.

I shook my head, and decided I had to tell someone what Ertzolle had done. It all came tumbling out, and she stood quietly with her listening face; head cocked to one side, eyes posed to look slightly sympathetic.

“Why would King Ertzolle possibly want to touch you?” she asked at last.

I stared at her, flabbergasted.

“He said he wants to marry me. Didn’t you hear me?” The terror of such a union pressed down on my shoulders like a heavy weight.

“I did. I’m unable to see the problem, Your Majesty. A king wants to marry you. You should be grateful for his attention. Goodness knows, with your figure, you probably had to work hard to get it.”

I couldn’t believe her behavior. “You sound like you’re jealous of the fact he touched me without my permission!”

“Without your permission? Really? Then why are you boasting to me about it?”

I shook my head. What was wrong with her? “I’m not boasting, I was trying to confide in you that something bad happened. It upset me so much I didn’t feel hungry.”

“Perhaps you should seek out men more often, then you might lose some weight,” Mirria replied, then turned on her heel and left.

“You haven’t been dismissed!” I bellowed after her. “And you should never turn your back on a princess!” She froze, turned around, plastered a fake smile on her face and curtseyed.

“Of course, Your Majesty. My apologies, Your Majesty,” she simpered, with an unmissable, sarcastic edge.

“Oh, begone, you evil wench!” I snapped, and closed my door, locking it behind me.
